Substantial earthworks are now underway on the Christchurch Convention Centre site.
Ōtākaro Limited is preparing the 2.5 hectare site for construction ahead of work beginning on the Convention Centre’s foundations around the middle of 2017.
Ōtākaro Chief Executive Albert Brantley says starting this work is a milestone.
“This is substantial central city site and it is great to see activity on it once again. What will begin to emerge is a world-class Convention Centre that will bring more people to Christchurch and create economic opportunities,” says Mr Brantley.
Protranz Earthmoving Ltd. is carrying out the work and will be adhering to strict safety requirements including dust control methods and air monitoring during this process.
The Convention Centre will be capable of hosting up to 2000 delegates for a variety of national and international events. It will include a 1400 delegate auditorium, a 3,600m2 exhibition hall and 1.600m2 of meeting rooms.
Ōtākaro is continuing to develop the Convention Centre design. Discussions with potential main works contractors are ongoing with a contract set to be awarded around the middle of next year.
The Convention Centre is expected to be completed late in 2019.
